Sugar maple leaf design, unchanged since the first Gold Maple Leaf (GML) coin was issued in 1979, and is struck incuse on this special edition. Black rhodium plating fills the field and enhances the natural shine of the coin's gold surface, which is only visible on the engraved relief. The reverse includes the engraved words "CANADA" and "FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR", as well as the purity standard of "99999".
